The federal government, through the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), maintains a national Do-Not-Call law (DNC) list. Many individuals have added their numbers to this list, which can easily be done by visiting the FCC’s website. Over 75% of all residential telephone numbers are now on the national DNC law list. Unless telemarketers are exempt, it is illegal for them to call numbers on DNC list. In order to avoid calling numbers on the DNC list, Telemarketers must purchase the DNC database and regularly scrub against the updated list. Telemarketers should also keep up to date on new developments, such as the FTC's recent amendments to the Telemarketing Sales Rule.
